This author is a literary genius. There are so many political fantasy books out there that were clearly written by people who don’t know more than the basics of the type of government they’re describing. Those books strive to portray realistic intrigue, political maneuverings, internal struggles, etc—but they often fall kind of flat.
Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” saga is completely different. Yes, he does use several of the “stereotypical” traits of political fantasy (like bastard offspring who want to rise to power), but there is absolutely nothing stereotypical about these books. Every single character is deeply and intimately thoughtout, and immediately jump out at the reader as real people, not pieces of Martin’s imagination. Their interactions are incredibly complex, weaving together a story that left me in a daze. Martin isn’t into the straightforward “A happens, which leads to B, which leads to C, the end” plot. You’d have to make a complex chart to follow the twists, turns, and knots that compose his story. But that’s not to say that it’s just one big complicated mess. On the contrary, he has obviously put an immense amount of time and effort into creating the most realistic story possible.
I wouldn’t call this “light reading.” The series can be pretty brutal, as should be expected from a realistic portrayal of war and intrigue. But I can’t describe how amazing it is. Martin is without a doubt the most talented political fantasy author I have ever read.

Although “Redwall” was originally written for a young audience, it has become incredibly popular with readers of all ages—and with good reason! Its writing style is simple and beautiful, its plot is straightforward and well constructed, the characters are incredibly developed and realistic, and the world itself is vividly painted. The relative simplicity of the plot is overlaid by a complex series of puzzles, riddles, and character interactions that will keep readers thinking and guessing, and they’ll be completely absorbed by the personal struggles and growth of the characters.
Matthias is forced to deal with issues that many children can relate to the desire for action and adventure instead of his ordinary peaceful life, the awkwardness of not quite fitting in, and concerns about his own adequacy. But Matthias slowly discovers his skills and strengths, and learns to have confidence in himself—for he is the only one who can lead the resistance against the invading forces of Cluny the Scourge.

This book had its moments. There were some nice writing techniques employed, and we got to see more character developments.
However, it got a bit slow towards the middle, and it was a struggle to continue turning the page.
The ending was good, when they are in Italy. Good descriptions.
