"Most Americans, whether introverted or extroverted, have learned to look like extroverts," writes psychologist (and introvert) Helgoe in this wellwritten and wellreasoned analysis that challenges the perception of introverts as a silent, problematic minority. The author reveals that 57% of the U.S. population identify as introverts and are so commonly misunderstood because many of them have become adept at mimicking extroversion (becoming a "Socially Accessible Introvert") to get by. Helgoe encourages introverts to see themselves as perfectly functional and to fulfill their need for solitude with regular retreats and creating a private space in their homes. Helgoe's book is wideranging and crosscultural, invoking how other societies (particularly in Japan and Scandinavia) are more compatible with and accepting of introversion. Helpful sections details why introverts need extroverts in their lives and how extroverts depend on introverts for their artistic contributions and inner "richness." The author's voice is vivid and engaging, and she skillfully draws reallife examples of awkward scenarios introverts find themselves in when forced to play a role in society or the workplace. Readers will find much insight, as well as a comforting sense of being understood and validated. Publishers Weekly.

selfhelp ebooks and Audio Books - by Gladwell MalcolmHow do we make decisions--good and bad--and why are some people so much better at it than others? That's the question Malcolm Gladwell asks and answers in the follow-up to his huge bestseller,... |
Blink, by Malcolm Gladwell, former journalist and author of two other New York Times bestsellers Outliers, and The Tipping Point, concerns the role intuition plays in the cognitive process, and how significant institutive decisions ("gut reactions") can be. It's an interesting subject
because, as the author himself notes, intuitive decisions are so often dismissed in favor of decisions based on reason, research, and analysis. We tend to favor that which can be articulated rather than visceral reactions, but the author argues (and quite convincingly) the intuitive reaction is often the result of our unconscious mind, quite correctly, recognizing a pattern, an insight, or a solution to a problem.
Expressing this contention in an informal, rather than pedantic tone, Gladwell draws on disparate examples from fields as diverse as medicine, military exercises, marriage counseling, and educational testing, which adds to the book's accessibility. It is definitely an entertaining read Gladwell is a superb storyteller, and his stories are memorable. And Blink is also a quick read clocking in at about 270 pages, but relying heavily on anecdote, you are halfway through before you know it. Associated Content.

In one of the best written business books I have ever read, Malcolm Gladwell argues, and deminstrates, that instinctive, snap decisions can often deliver better results than long considered thought processes. As he did in 'The Tipping Point', Gladwell illustrates his points with stories. And what stories they are. From the conversation about their dog that shows that a marriage is headed for the divorce courts, through why the worst president in American history got elected, to a shooting of an unarmed man in the Bronx, the stories make fascinating reading. Gladwell is a great storyteller. A book that entertains as it makes you think. (ebook version)

Self Help eBooks - from author Twyla Tharp Creativity is not a gift from the gods, says Twyla Tharp, bestowed by some divine and mystical spark. It is the product of preparation and effort, and it's within reach of everyone who wants to... |
Perhaps the leading choreographer of her generation, Tharp offers a thesis on creativity that is more complex than its selfhelp title suggests. To be sure, an array of prescriptions and exercises should do much to help those who feel some pentup inventiveness to find a system for turning idea into product, whether that be a story, a painting or a song. This freewheeling interest across various creative forms is one of the main points that sets this book apart and leads to its success. The approach may have been born of the need to reach an audience greater than choreographer hopefuls, and the diversity of examples (from Maurice Sendak to Beethoven on one page) frees the student to develop his or her own patterns and habits, rather than imposing some regimen that works for Tharp. The greatest number of illustrations, however, come from her experiences. As a result, this deeply personal book, while not a memoir, reveals much about her own struggles, goals and achievements. Finally, the book is also a rumination on the nature of creativity itself, exploring themes of process versus product, the influences of inspiration and rigorous study, and much more. It deserves a wide audience among general readers and should not be relegated to the selfhelp section of bookstores. Publishers Weekly.

Self Help eBooks - from author Rick Warren Self-help books often suggest that you try to discover the meaning and purpose of your life by looking within yourself, but Rick Warren says that is the wrong place to start. You must begin... |
From Publishers Weekly.
Pastor of Saddleback Church, a Southern Baptist megachurch in southern California with weekly attendance of more than 15,000, Warren now applies his highly successful "purposedriven" framework, developed in the bestseller The PurposeDriven Church, to individual experience. The same principles Warren has taught to thousands of pastors to help churches be healthy and effective can also drive lives, he says. The book argues that discerning and living five Godordained purposesworship, community, discipleship, ministry and evangelismis key to effective living. His 40 short chapters are intended to be read over 40 days' time, giving readers small pieces of his purposediscovering program to chew on. Warren certainly knows his Bible. Of 800plus footnotes, only 18 don't refer to Christian Scripture. He deliberately works with 15 different Bible translations, leaning heavily on contemporary translations and paraphrases, as an interesting way of plumbing biblical text. The almost exclusively biblical frame of reference stakes out the audience niche for this manual for Christian living. It's practical yet paradoxically abstract, lacking the kind of reallife examples and stories that lifeapplication books usually provide in abundance. The book has flaws editing might have fixed. People are quoted without being identified, and subheads simply repeat lines of text, which tends to make the prose sound too simple. This book is not for all, but for those needing a certain kind of scriptural rock, it is solid.

In case you don't know, Orpah was so enamoured by this book that she set up a 12 week television seminar with the author to discuss it. If you haven't seen it already it would be worth your while to see if it's still available on her website. The way it worked was you read a chapter and then they discussed it. Since the book does tend to be quite heavy and has to be read in small doses, this is a great way to do it. It’s a classic singlewoman scenario you really like this guy, but he’s giving mixed messages. You make excuses, decide he’s confused, afraid of commitment. Behrendt, a former executive story editor for Sex and the City—and a formerly single (now happily married) guy who knows all the excuses—provides a simple answer he’s just not that into you. Stop kidding yourself, let go and look for someone else who will be. After all, as Behrendt sensibly puts it, "if a (sane) guy really likes you, there ain’t nothing that’s going to get in his way." If you’re not convinced yet, by all means read this smart, funny and surprisingly upbeat little book, full of q’s and a’s covering every excuse woman has ever made to avoid admitting to herself that a man just wasn’t that smitten with her.
